Assistance League of Southern California’s Volunteer Center of Los Angeles (ALSC – VCLA) has a variety of resources for organizations and communities that can benefit from volunteer involvement and volunteer opportunities for individuals who would like to serve their community. It was founded by volunteer members of ALSC's Hilltoppers Auxiliary in 1949, becoming the largest volunteer center in the United States. The programs available through the Volunteer Center of Los Angeles are:
Volunteer Involvement Program (VIP) offers volunteer opportunities to students, individuals, families, community organizations and corporations. The program recruits prospective volunteers and matches skills, talents and preferences with thousands of organizations throughout Los Angeles and the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope Valleys that benefit from their help. VIP helps nonprofit agencies carry out their mission, providing volunteer support that enhances service delivery. VIP highlights current volunteer opportunities on the VCLA Web site at www.vcla.net, which lists a wide range of short-term and long-term projects.
Court Collaborations include the Court-Referred Community Service (CRCS) Program, Van Nuys Community Court and Work Crew. These programs represent important public/private collaborations that help rehabilitate/educate individuals who have been convicted of crimes and provide much-needed help to neighborhoods and community organizations. Client referrals to organizations that participate in this program have proven to be more effective than incarceration, reduce recidivism rates and restores neighborhoods where crimes have been committed.
Youth Programs consist of Project Teen Reach, Points of Light Leadership Institute, the Juvenile Community Service Program and Social Responsibility training. Project Teen Reach provides life skills training to first and second time juvenile offenders; The Points of Light Leadership Institute enables young people to become leaders in service to their communities; The Juvenile Community Service Program offers alternative sentencing for juveniles; and Social Responsibility training gives at-risk teens techniques that build social responsibility and helps unify families.
English as a Second Language (ESL) and Citizen Training Program (CTP) are programs that teach participants basic reading and writing skills and prepare students for the U.S. Citizenship Test.
Senior Programs match adults age 55+ with their peers, school children and organizations that benefit from their experience, expertise, wisdom and compassion. They are: the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Senior Companions and Foster Grandparents.
DUI Prevention Program is a court-referred community service program that is facilitated by professionals that have education/counseling experience and focuses on preventing recidivism by convicted DUI offenders. Clients receive a comprehensive overview of the serious social and physical ramifications of driving under the influence.
